Soapbox: Why Penguins Should Be in Mario Kart (And Why It Makes Sense)

In a place as strange as the Mario Kart roster, it makes sense!

The Mario Kart roster is a strange place, it’s a place where many fan favourites (and highly hated) characters are together to race.

Most choices on the roster make sense, such as Mario, Luigi and the rest of the main gang. But some choices are strange. In this article, I’m going to go over how penguin would make more sense than some choices made in previous Mario Kart games, and also make some cases on how penguin would be a suitable fit for the Mario Kart roster.

Case #1: Honey Queen (Mario Kart 7)

Honey Queen first appeared in 2007 as a character in Super Mario Galaxy. She has appeared in 5 games total, those being Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2, Mario Kart 7 Super Smash Bros Ultimate as a spirit, and Dr. Mario World.

Now we’ll contrast this to the Penguin, who first appeared in 1996 as a character in Super Mario 64. The penguin has made appearances in 29 Mario games, some notable ones are Super Mario 64, Super Mario Galaxy, Super Mario Galaxy 2 and their most latest appearance in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe Booster Course Pass Wave 2, in the level Snow Land as an obstacle.

The penguin has been in 6x more games than the honey queen, but hasn’t been a character in Mario Kart.

Case #2: Wiggler, Koopa, Shy Guy and more

With the additions of Shy Guy, Wiggler, Koopa and Lakitu and more to the Mario Kart roster, this proves that it doesn’t have to be just main characters (or even side characters) in the roster. Which means that penguin would make a nice fit, especially with 29 Mario games under their belt.

Case #3: Inclusions in Mario Kart

Penguins have already had inclusions in Mario Kart, such as the Penguin Tour from Mario Kart Tour. The Penguin Tour included Mario, Luigi, Toad and Toadette in their Penguin Suits from the New Super Mario Bros series. As well as Penguin Cars, including a black and white one, and a blue one. Obviously penguins are popular enough to get into Mario Kart, if they have a whole tour dedicated to them!

Conclusion

It may not go far, but I love the little guys from Mario. I’d love to see them zoom around in little race cars and death stare Mario as they drive past (That’s what he gets for dropping the baby penguin in Super Mario 64).
