Former Nintendo of America President, Reggie Fils-Aimé, Reveals Nintendo Was Working on an “Adaptive Controller”

An accessible way to play

During an interview with Inverse, former President of Nintendo of America, Reggie Fils-Aimé, revealed that during his tenure at Nintendo, the company was working on an “adaptive controller” as recently as 2019.

“Imagine an adaptive controller that you could play with your latest Xbox, PlayStation, or Nintendo platform. That’s what we were working on three years ago. My hope is that the effort has continued. I’m not sure if it has or has not. But also, my hope is that controller — and the ability for that controller to connect with all of the various systems — is launched and shared with consumers as quickly as possible.”

Since Fils-Aimé left the company, we haven’t heard about this controller (or anything similar) from Big N. The Switch has received some third-party accessibility-focused controllers from accessory makers such as Hori, but nothing first-party has come to light since.

It’s unknown if this project is still being worked on at Nintendo.
